Data owners can be considered the &#8220;business steward&#8221; of the data, ensuring it is treated as a valuable asset and used responsibly and compliantly to achieve business objectives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The data owner is different from other data roles due to their level of strategic responsibility. While the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.huwise.com\/en\/glossary\/data-steward\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">data steward<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> manages tactical day-to-day aspects and the data custodian handles technical infrastructure, the data owner has strategic responsibility and possesses final decision-making authority regarding data use and management.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Data Owner Responsibilities<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The data owner is responsible for a range of data management dimensions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Governance and policies: they define and approve policies for data access, usage, and retention<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data quality: they establish <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.huwise.com\/en\/glossary\/data-quality\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">data quality<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> standards for their domain, approve the classification of data assets, and actively participate in the organization&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huwise.com\/en\/glossary\/data-governance\/\">data governance<\/a> council<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Access management and security: they authorize or deny data access, determine who can access data, under what circumstances, and for what purposes.
