Karen’s experience and expertise

Karen Bastien is the co-founder of WeDoData, an agency specializing in information design and data visualization, and a data journalist. A graduate of the Centre de Formation des Journalistes in 2000, she worked for five years at Libération before joining Terra eco, a pioneering media outlet on ecology, as editor-in-chief.

In 2011, she co-founded WeDoData, which develops user-centered web data applications for media outlets (Arte, France Télévisions, Radio France, Libération) as well as for public and scientific institutions (IPCC, INPI, Paris School of Economics…), turning databases into narrative-driven and interactive experiences.

Her expertise combines journalism, design, and technology to enhance the user experience. She excels at transforming complex datasets into clear and engaging stories. At the heart of her work is data literacy, helping society understand and engage with numbers in a world where data is everywhere.

Karen Bastien embodies an approach where journalism and data meet to create impactful visual narratives that are accessible and understandable by all.

A word from Karen

“What we don't count... doesn't count. It is a harsh reality and, at the same time, an immense power in the hands of those who advocate for and work with high-quality data. Data makes the invisible visible, allowing stories to be told that you otherwise wouldn't have seen. It is an incredible lever for change within organizations—provided they invest in storytelling and data design.”
