After decades of electricity production following a linear, centralized model, the sector has transformed as new renewable sources are added to the mix. Leveraging data is crucial to support and optimize both these new energy sources (such as wind turbines and solar panels) and their new uses (such as with electric vehicles). Focusing on data enables corporate and individual energy consumption to be optimized in this new model. To achieve this we wanted to work with our partners across multiple sectors, including energy, automotive, maritime, manufacturing, agri-food, transport, and facilities management, to increase value from data.

Challenge: Optimizing data and use in a complex ecosystem

To remain competitive in a rapidly changing market, we needed to find solutions to make our data understandable and shareable with our partners.

"This project allowed us to show that we were capable of capturing data, processing it, enriching it, and creating value from it, specifically in the fields of IoT, energy management and industry. The platform gave me the chance to understand the mechanics of generating value from our data, and that's very powerful."

A Data as a Service offering to increasing collaboration between energy stakeholders

After setting up a data sharing portal (the Data Library) to widen access to data internally, we launched Exchange, its marketplace of data and digital products. Exchange allows users to reach a wider customer base in new markets that were previously difficult to target. Its marketplace of data services brings together:

  • A wide variety of resources – APIs, analytics and datasets – to improve digital offerings
  • Digital tools and know-how to adapt solutions and accelerate their marketing

For example: the EcoStruxure Facility Expert Data API is a data service that allows organizations to easily collect their Internet of Things (IoT) data from sensors (such as temperature and air quality in order to reuse them to optimize energy management. Many organizations are using this service to demonstrate that their buildings are complying with regulations around energy efficiency and emissions.

Exchange also offers a powerful collaborative cloud platform for sharing ideas and concepts between ecosystem partners. Users have access to a network of solution providers for the energy sector.

The platform has become a collaboration space for Schneider Electric and our partners. Multiple data offerings and products are now available via Exchange, allowing Schneider Electric to easily work with our ecosystem to create value.

Huwise: the foundation of Schneider Electric's Data Sharing

To supply the marketplace and share IoT data with our partners and customers, Schneider Electric uses specific features of the ODS platform:

API platform

We provide our customers and partners with APIs to enable them to retrieve the latest, up-to-date IoT datasets directly from the marketplace. These come from the Huwise platform, which generates a standardized API for each dataset, enhanced with reference documentation.

Large self-service datasets

As they are generated by connected devices that continuously produce data, the datasets made available on Exchange contain several million records. Thanks to the reliable, robust, and high-performance architecture of the Huwise platform, our customers and partners can immediately access large, ready to use volumes of data.

Huwise and data management solutions from Schneider Electric

Thanks to Huwise’s extensive integration possibilities, Schneider Electric instantly interfaces the platform with its cloud and data lakehouse solutions, including Microsoft Azure and Databricks, to quickly feed data into Exchange.

The Databricks and Huwise collaboration brings even more value to the catalog of data services already available to Schneider Electric. This made it possible to offer pre-aggregated datasets to customers so that they could easily create and follow their own dashboards.

Results: A united ecosystem, boosting competitiveness

Thanks to Exchange, we have successfully worked with our partners, creating new services and enabling everyone to strengthen the wider ecosystem.

The platform has been enriched with more than 195 datasets and has over 540 users, representing 200 companies. It is a real value-creating lever that has enabled us to set up multiple data services.

"We have been supporting Schneider Electric's teams in their data projects for 5 years. The company is a pioneer in providing data services to partners - many other organizations across all sectors are now looking to replicate its successful approach."
