Chief Data & Analytics Officer (CDAO)

The Chief Data & Analytics Officer (CDAO) is a senior executive responsible for defining and executing an organization's data and analytics strategy. Combining two historically separate disciplines, data management and analytics, into a unified leadership role, the CDAO ensures that data governance, data infrastructure, and business intelligence capabilities all work in service of a single strategic vision: turning data into competitive advantage.

The CDAO role has emerged as organizations recognize that having great data is not enough, the ability to extract, interpret, and act on insights from that data requires dedicated executive leadership.

Core Responsibilities of a CDAO

  • Data strategy & governance: Establishing enterprise-wide data governance frameworks, policies, and standards that ensure data is accurate, secure, and used ethically.
  • Analytics enablement: Building the people, processes, and platforms that enable business units to access and act on data insights through self-service data tools, business intelligence solutions, and advanced analytics.
  • Data platform ownership: Overseeing the technical infrastructure, data lakes, data warehouses, data pipelines, and data marketplace platforms, that underpin the organization’s data capabilities.
  • Data culture & literacy: Championing data literacy and data culture programs that empower all employees to make data-driven decisions.
  • AI & ML strategy alignment: Ensuring that artificial intelligence and machine learning initiatives are grounded in high-quality, well-governed data.
  • Cross-functional collaboration: Acting as the bridge between the C-suite, IT, business units, and the data function, translating business objectives into data priorities.

CDAO versus CDO versus CAO

The CDAO role consolidates responsibilities that were previously split:

  • Chief Data Officer (CDO): Traditionally focused on data governance, data quality, and data infrastructure.
  • Chief Analytics Officer (CAO): Focused on analytics capabilities, data science, and insight generation.

As the two disciplines become inseparable, you cannot analyze data that you don’t trust. Governance without analytics produces no value, meaning that many organizations have combined them into the CDAO. The related emerging title of Chief Data & AI Officer further extends this scope to include AI strategy.

The CDAO’s Role in the Data Marketplace Era

As organizations invest in data product frameworks and internal data marketplaces, the CDAO becomes the executive sponsor who ensures that data assets are treated as strategic products, with clear ownership, quality standards, and measurable business value.

The CDAO works closely with data governance officers, data stewards, and data architects to build an organization where data is not just collected, but continuously curated, shared, and monetized.
