Challenges: Meeting the needs of a changing energy ecosystem

Across the globe, the energy sector is looking to drive the shift to net zero. This is transforming the energy ecosystem, with technologies such as solar power, batteries, and smart meters enabling customers to generate, store and sell back energy to the grid.

Endeavour is supporting this transition by creating a modern and renewable grid, collaborating with customers and its ecosystem to deliver on growing needs for clean electricity in the region. Data sharing is central to this collaborative, holistic approach.

Data Experience: Building a growing, grenn future for western Sydney

Endeavour Energy is focused on supporting the growth of the Greater Western Sydney area, working closely with communities, businesses, councils and residents to develop its grid and bring new technologies and initiatives to the region.

It knew that to increase collaboration and support customers and other stakeholders in their move towards net zero it had to build fundamental capabilities, improve trust in data, increase data accessibility and turn data insights into action.

Previously it published a number of datasets through its website. However, these were limited in number, while it was difficult for users to easily navigate and download them. This meant that Endeavour’s data team had to manually process a growing number of data requests, increasing its workload and putting pressure on resources.

To achieve its data sharing goals, Endeavour therefore committed to providing easy-to-access, self-service data through a data marketplace with an intuitive user interface and APIs for both internal and external stakeholders, such as customers, local authorities, flexibility providers, and researchers.

After extensive research, Endeavour selected Peclet as its solution provider. Peclet, Australia’s leading open data solution provider, works with organizations across the country to help them seamlessly share their data with all stakeholders through innovative, engaging and convenient self-service data marketplaces.

To deliver the marketplace Peclet deployed technology from its partner Huwise, providing a powerful data marketplace solution that combines an intuitive user interface, advanced features and seamless administrative capabilities to maximize efficiency. Huwise works with energy providers in Europe and North America to help them effectively collaborate with their stakeholders through data.

Launched in August 2024, Endeavour’s open data marketplace is the first dedicated solution created by an Australian energy network operator. It provides a comprehensive, and growing, range of data on the company’s network and assets, solar power penetration, and electricity usage at a substation level, available through self-service visualizations, maps, and graphs, as well as being downloadable in common file formats and via APIs.

Data on Endeavour’s network infrastructure is one of the most viewed and downloaded on the marketplace. Covering over 740,000 current, planned and decommissioned streetlights, electricity poles and substations, it provides a zoomable view of assets, showing their locations for stakeholders, such as developers and local authorities.

Across the Western Sydney area, more and more residents and businesses are installing solar panels. To highlight and analyze this growth, Endeavour provides data through easily understandable heatmaps on the top 10 zip codes producing energy, including the amount of power being exported and number of systems in place.

To help future planning and understand current demand, Endeavour shares power supply data for all of its 162 substations. This provides a 15 minute average, showing times of greatest demand throughout the day.

Huwise And Energy:

Data is essential to building more collaborative, decentralized and above all decarbonized energy ecosystems around the world. Data needs to be easily available to a growing range of stakeholders, including local authorities, renewables providers, developers, consumers, regulators, employees, and EV charging point companies.

Thanks to its experience and ability to make data consumable at scale, Huwise has been chosen by a growing number of energy companies and research organizations to power their data marketplaces. These include the U.S. Department of Energy, Elia (Belgium), E-REDES (Portugal), EDF, GRTgaz, Enedis and GRDF (all France), UK Power Networks, SP Energy Networks, Scottish & Southern Energy, Northern Powergrid (UK) and KAPSARC (Saudi Arabia).

Huwise : the data marketplace for data sharing at scale

To deliver seamless data sharing to its ecosystem, Endeavour Energy relies on three key strengths of Huwise’s solution and approach:

Powerful Visualizations

Data on the Endeavour marketplace needs to be easily understandable to a wide range of audiences, many of whom are not data specialists. The Huwise solution includes in-built visualization features, allowing users to view information in a wide range of formats, including maps, graphs and heatmaps, increasing usage and data availability.

Strong Partnership With Peclet

Huwise has worked with Peclet since 2016, with the two companies collaborating on a wide range of portals across Australia. The combination of Peclet’s market knowledge, expert support and data science capabilities with Huwise’s technology provides a complete solution for Endeavour and its needs.

Intuitive Self-Service Interface

Simply publishing data is not enough to ensure that it is accessed and consumed. Huwise’s intuitive user interface, modeled on e-commerce website experiences, makes it seamless and easy for portal visitors to discover, visualize and download data through powerful, AI-driven self-service features, increasing usage and reducing requests to Endeavour’s data team.

Results: leading the transformation in the australian energy sector

Deploying its new open data marketplace is delivering major benefits for Endeavour Energy, including:

  • Enhancing Transparency And Efficiency

By improving accessibility and enabling self-service access to its datasets, Endeavour is increasing transparency with the public, regulators, and other stakeholders. As data can be accessed, visualized and downloaded through the data marketplace’s self-service interface, this reduces the need for Endeavour’s data team to manually respond to information requests, increasing efficiency and delivering ROI.

  • Meeting Stakeholder Needs

The energy transition requires strong collaboration and careful planning between all stakeholders in a decentralized energy ecosystem. By making relevant data available in a variety of formats, Endeavour is providing all stakeholders, from local councils and energy generators, to flexibility providers and consumers, with the information they need to work together and plan their move to net zero.

  • Supporting Future Plans

Endeavour understands that data sharing is a journey, and is actively working to increase the number and range of datasets shared on its data marketplace. The combination of Huwise’s ease of administration, cloud-based scalability and powerful data governance features means that it supports the portal’s growth, now and in the future.

"Endeavour Energy's first of its kind portal demonstrates the importance of effective data sharing to a successful energy transition. By providing seamless, self-service access to data for all its stakeholders, Endeavour is increasing transparency, boosting efficiency, and supporting the growth of the Greater Western Sydney region."
